Bellingham's Alternative Response Team: Addressing Behavioral Health Needs
Empowering Mental Health Specialists in Non-Violent Call Response
Bellingham has launched a groundbreaking program, the Alternative Response Team (ART), that provides a comprehensive response to non-violent behavioral health calls in the community. This innovative initiative aims to divert individuals with mental health or substance use challenges away from the criminal justice system and connect them with the necessary resources and support.
Responding to Community Needs
Launched in January 2023, the ART program deploys two behavioral health specialists to respond to specific non-violent behavioral health calls. These calls are typically fielded by the Bellington Police Department (BPD), but in situations where there is no need for police intervention, the ART team is dispatched instead. This approach recognizes the need for specialized care and support in addressing mental health crises and behavioral incidents.
The ART team consists of licensed mental health professionals who are equipped to assess individuals' mental health needs, provide immediate support, and connect them with appropriate resources. These resources may include outpatient counseling, psychiatric care, substance abuse treatment, or other community support services.
Collaboration and Partnerships
Bellingham is collaborating with Whatcom County to develop comprehensive programs that effectively respond to mental health emergencies. This collaboration is essential in establishing a cohesive and coordinated system of care, ensuring that individuals receive the assistance they need in a timely and appropriate manner.
The ART program is an innovative step towards addressing the complex issue of mental health in our community. By providing specialized care and diverting individuals away from the criminal justice system, Bellingham is working towards creating a more compassionate and equitable society for all.
