CDC Guidelines
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises healthcare personnel to avoid artificial nails to maintain proper hand hygiene. This recommendation is based on the concern that artificial nails may harbor microorganisms and potentially contribute to healthcare-associated infections (HAIs).
UM BWMC Policy
BWMC has implemented a policy prohibiting the use of methyl acrylate UV hardened gel nails for healthcare workers. This policy is in line with current UM BWMC policy.
AORN Recommendations
The Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) recommends the following concerning acrylic artificial nails:
- Avoid manicure cuticle cutting and nail filing
- Avoid artificial and gel nails
